JAKARTA - More people are pointed at as suspects in a corruption case at the Indonesian embassy in Bangkok, Thailand. After a team of investigators visited Thailand, they decided that the current ambassador to Thailand, Muhammad Hatta, also is a suspect in a case in which 2.5 billion Rupiah (176,000 euro) is 'misplaced'.
"During the investigation, there was more than enough evidence to see him as a person that is involved in corruption," said a spokesperson for the High Court, Didiek Darmanto. Hatta became the third suspect after two other staff members of the Indonesian embassy in Bangkok were earlier seen as suspects, including the vice-ambassador to Thailand, Djumantoro Purbo.
Didiek explained that all suspects were held on the base of evidence and witnesses. The judge was part of six-member investigation team that left for Thailand on October 12. They stayed in Bangkok vor one week while investigating some 20 people. Hatta was questioned earlier this morning, but it was not decided yet whether he will be held in custody.
The lawyer of Hatta, Sira Prayuna, said that he had discussed this case of possible corruption with his client earlier. He would not elaborate on what was discussed between them. "We will see what will happen next," he said to finish off the conversation. The case is about funds of 2.5 billion Rupiah that were left over from the budget for the embassy over the year 2008. The money was never returned to state coffers.
