MOJOKERTO - A joint archeology team for historical Majapahit (1293 to around 1500) sites has discovered a complete village from that age in one single area. The village is located near the city of Mojokerto in East Java. This is the first time that a complete village has been found. The village was most likely used by the elite of the Majapahit kingdom.
At the moment, the village is being excavated. The center of the village measures some 140 by 60 meters. The roads and places in the village have roads that are paved with small stones while irrigation systems are in place as well. Houses have wells and the houses are strengthened with proper foundations.
The head of the archeological team, Professor Mundardji, said that this was the first time that such a complete and extended village from that time was found. The plans of the team are to excavate the site as much as possible. The third step will start later this year. They also plan on reconstructing the old site.
