JAKARTA - The number of buildings in Jakarta that is demolished because they are not built according to regulations now stands at 1,100. The head of the Building Supervision Office (P2B) in Jakarta, Hari Sasongko Kushadi, told that last year only some 700 buildings have been demolished. Most of the 1,100 buildings lack a proper building permit (IMB) while others were built in green zones or over drainage systems.
Hari told that the demolishment of those buildings that violate regulations has cost some 1.2 billion Rupiah (85,000 euro) until now. There are still some 200 buildings left to demolish, but extra funds are needed to complete this process. "Demolishing buildings is a form of shock therapy for owners that think they don't need to stick to the regulations," told Hari to reporters.
After many construction sites and buildings in the capital were sealed because they lack proper permits or violate regulations, it seemed that this was not enough to stop people from violating rules. Some buildings that were already in use, were still in use after they were sealed for example, but people entered from another entrance than the one that had been sealed.
Sanctions for those violating laws concerning building regulations are pretty high with fines up to 1.5 billion Rupiah (106,000 euro) and three years imprisonment. Bringing people to court however is a lengthy process and just sealing off is not enough to prevent people from using illegally built structures, that is why the city government now prefers to demolish these buildings altogether.
