JAKARTA - Residents of Saumlaki, and some other cities in the Maluku archipelago panicked and alarmed their traditional alarms when a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck their area at 23:40 local time (GMT+9) last evening. Residents fled their houses and sounded the alarm to indicate to others that they had to flee to a safe place told Mouthy Siwabessy, a resident of Saumlaki.
The earthquake was strong enough to cause a tsunami, but a real one did not materialize. The earthquake was measured at a depth of some 165 kilometers beneath the seafloor at 209 kilometers southwest of the city of Saumlaki. The quake was felt in Dobo in the Aru archipelago, Tual in Southeast Maluku and the city of Ambon.
Directly after the earthquake, told Siwabessy, some village elderly ran to the shore to see if there were any signs of a tsunami. They soon found out there were no signs of any tsunami. Most people stayed outside their houses for several hours, fearing an aftershock. There are no reports of damage or victims at this moment.
