BANDA ACEH - The newly inaugurated members of the legislative council in Aceh are planning on revising the sharia 'stoning'-bylaw recently passed by - now - former legislators. That law allows people that commit adultery to be stoned to death in the province. The turn-around is remarkable, but does more resemble the wishes of the people in the province than enacting such Islamic regulations in the first place.
"The article on stoning needs to be revised most urgently because it is not suitable for the community in Aceh, despite the implementation of Islamic sharia law in the province," said the speaker of the legislative council, Hasbi Abdullah. He told that the people in Aceh were not ready for such a bylaw because it went against basic human rights. "Moreover, Aceh is currently still being supervised by, and the focus of, international attention," he said.
Hasbi said that he did not want Aceh to be seen as a place that is not friendly to the international community and create a bad record on human rights for the region. Three other sharia bylaws that were adopted by the former legislature will also be revised as soon as possible. Hasbi said that the bylaws were nothing short of ticking time bombs if they were not abolished as soon as possible. "The new legislators will take care of that," said Hasbi.
Such a dramatic move from installing sharia bylaws under one government and repealing them as soon as the new government has been installed is rare. It is even more rare when it is considered that the leading political party is still the same, namely the Prosperous Justice Party PKS. Is it likely that the new national government of Yudhoyono, in which the PKS gained four ministers, was well-thought step of Yudhoyono to turn back the enactment of backward radical Islamic law in Aceh.

If only the US will be as 'progressive' as Aceh when sanity sets in and the rakyat gets rid of the Obambi the Mad. I hope Congress and the Senate will get rid of all this insane regulations.
