JAKARTA - The customs at the international airport of Soekarno-Hatta near Jakarta have stopped the smuggling of some 26.8 kilograms of drugs and 17.5 liters of liquid drugs towards the Middle East. The drugs are worth some 195 billion Rupiah (13.8 million euro). Ten people from the Middle East were to fly on four separate flights to carry the drugs to their destination.
At first three people were apprehended separately at the airport. All three were Iranians which came to Indonesia via Malaysia. After a next flight they arrested another four Iranians, all women. They arrived with an Emirates Air flight from Damascus in Syria. Those from Damascus has brought 28 packages of drugs hidden in food containers with a value of over 37 billion Rupiah (2.6 million euro).
Two other people were arrested after a Qatar Airlines flight from Doha in Qatar arrived in Jakarta. They brought liquid drugs into Indonesia in bottles of shampoo and liquid soap with a value of 33 billion Rupiah (2.3 million euro) On another flight one male person from Iran was arrested. He brought 4.54 kilograms of crystalline drugs with a value of 10 billion Rupiah (710.000 euro).
A spokesperson for the local police said that this was the biggest catch ever made on the airport, with a total of some 195 billion Rupiah). Those who brought the drugs are currently in prison, waiting for their upcoming trials. They can get a maximum of ten years in prison or a fine of 300 million Rupiah (21.000 euro). The National Narcotics Brigade (BNN) is working together with the Organized Crime department of the national police to break down the entire network.
