JAKARTA - In recent weeks, the Kaba volcano in the province of Bengkulu, West Sumatra, has showed an increase in activity. At a number of places there are signs of increased volcanic activity visible. A number of new cone-shaped piles of volcanic material has formed and the volcano is also exhausting small plumes of white smoke.
Since the earthquake of September 30, with a magnitude of 7.4 on the Richter Scale, the number of tremors inside the volcano has increased dramatically. These tremors however are only registered by sensitive equipment and can not be felt by humans. The volcano showed a further increase in the last three days, after which the decision was made to raise the status of the volcano from 'normal' to 'aware'.
However the status has been raised, there is no direct danger for people living in the area of the volcano. The volcano mainly shows some deformations around the crater. Several of the measuring points have been moved up to ten centimeters since early October. The crater lake measured 72°C on October 15.
The last big eruption of the Kaba volcano was on March 26, 1952. A thunder-like sound could be heard and the volcano ejected glowing material as well. In June 2000 the volcano became more active as well, which was the result of an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter Scale. A large-scale eruption did not materialize then.
