TIMIKA - Two people were injured in a new shooting incident at the PT Freeport mine yesterday morning. The injured are being treated at a local clinic. The shooting near the gold and copper mine took place around 09:30 local time (GMT+9) between mile 41 and 42 along the road between the town of Timika and the company's Grasberg mine.
Agus Rianto, a spokesperson from the police said that the two injured people were employees of the company. One was hit in the arm and thigh and the other in the hand and waist. They were both shot but are not in serious condition. Agus said that their full bus was shot at several times when transporting employees.
Earlier this year a 29-year-old Australian, an Indonesian security guard working for Freeport and a local policeman died in an ambush in the same area earlier this year. In 2002 two American teachers and their Indonesian colleague were shot dead at in same area as well.
