DEPOK - The city of Depok has already committed itself to closing down all karaoke in the regency, but has yet to forcefully close those outlets that have not been closed yet. They were given a weeks time to do so. The head of the civil police Satpol PP in the city of Depok explained that warning letters had already been sent earlier ordering all karaoke to close down within a week.
A spokesperson of the civil police, Sariyo, has said that this was the third and last warning letter to be sent. If the places did not close down within a week, they would be closed down by force. Earlier last week, all permits for karaoke in the are were withdrawn after a meeting of the Tourist department in the city. The city government recently found that karaoke is not permitted according to local bylaws.
The mayor of Depok has been criticized earlier for implementing Shariyah-style bylaws, which is not strange considering the mayor, Nur Mahmudi Ismail, is a member of the Islamic PKS (Prosperous Justice Party) political party which is looking to enforce a hidden agenda of strict Islamic rules by political force. Earlier this year, several Islamic scholars had asked him to act on karaoke, because some of the might be used for immoral acts.
