AirAsia plays with passengers LIPPO CIKARANG - Every once in a while I do get to fly short distances in Indonesia. Because I don't fly to very exotic destinations which can only be reached once every few days, I often have the choice between several operators. That puts back the fun in flying a little bit, because looking for the right tickets is part of the travel already.

In the last two years I was able to fly a number of flights with Indonesia AirAsia. This is indeed a company that belongs to the Malaysian AirAsia. They often fly with planes that have just arrived from Toulouse in France - Airbus indeed - and good services without too much extra's made it possible to fly for a nice price as well. Most often they were not the cheapest, but they hide that well enough that most people think they are.

That I had to pay for my luggage was no problem, by backpack and laptop were carry-on and thus free. In the plane I always had something like a sandwich to eat and the lovely cabin crew - dressed in bright red - was also allowed to serve me an orange juice from the bottle during the flight as well. Many things are bright red with AirAsia, but not everything fortunately because that would be bad for your eyes.

Starting earlier this year I noticed something. For the first time my partner - girlfriend - and I were placed separated from each other. We were almost first in line to check-in but still were appointed seats away from each other, behind each other to be more precise. Several months earlier the website offered to choose seats for 15.000 Rupiah each, but I did not expect to be placed away from each other like this.

The same thing happened again a few months later on the route Jakarta - Batam, which is not being offered by AirAsia any longer. The plane was only half full when the doors closed so I took another seat which I liked as a customer of AirAsia. At this moment it became clear what policy AirAsia used, because there was more than enough space to put me and my girlfriend next to each other.

That was somewhat of a disappointment for a passenger that regularly uses AirAsia. I don't expect any extra benefits because of that - I won't say no to any offered to me as well - but such an obvious way of trying to earn money is a little bit too much for me. It is not about bad services, but that 'cheap' they say they are is just too fake. Fortunately you don't have to pay when you use the toilet or when you s[ill your coffee.

Still I will fly with AirAsia. I still like their 'no-thrills' flying, but you have to keep certain things in mind. If you buy tickets for a flight lasting two hours or longer, you might want to order a snack and a drink. Buying them in the plane is possible, but booking them with your ticket is slightly cheaper.
Do you want to sit down next to your partner? Book separately and pay for it.
Do you want to have a chair with extra leg space? Book separately and pay for it.
Do you want to bring more than just a backpack? Book separately and pay for it.
Do you want to board the plane first? Book separately and pay for it.
Do you want to sit in front to be able to turn on your mobile phone when you have arrived? You already guess it ... book separately and pay for it. But for the rest it is indeed no-thrills flying for a nice price.
