DENPASAR - The expansion of the international airport of Ngurah Rai on the island of Bali will start early next year. Both the domestic as well as the international passenger terminals will be extended, and supporting facilities like parking lots will be upgraded.
The expansion project, which is to cost some 1.5 trillion Rupiah (109 million euro), will create a traditional Balinese style on the outside of the building. The renovation has been delayed several times now as previous plans were rejected by the governor.
The current terminal building for international passengers measures just over 63,000 square meters and has a capacity to handle 7.4 million passengers. The domestic terminal is some 11.200 square meters and has a capacity of 1.5 million passengers. The most recent plan decreases the business area with 30 percent. Some ten percent will be used as public space.
