LIPPO CIKARANG - However tariffs of toll roads throughout many parts of Java and parts of Sumatra and Sulawesi have indeed been increased late last month, price hikes are not as drastic as they were first portrayed. Most users will hardly have any increase at all, since tariffs for higher road classes were among those increased most. This means that an entire Indonesian family stuffed in one oversized SUV still pays almost nothing to use the toll roads.
I don't have such an SUV, in fact I don't even have a car yet since I just moved here and I never needed a car back in Yogyakarta. A motorcycle there is good enough to move around and if a destination is too far away, there is always public transport available to bring you there. Here in the neighborhood of Jakarta that is no different, but because of the sheer size, a car is much faster than public transport so I will have to get one soon.
My last trip by public transport from Lippo Cikarang to the international airport of Soekarno-Hatta on the other side of Jakarta was September 27, 2009. This was exactly one day before the new prices came into effect. Banners and new signs were already put up to inform road users about the upcoming changes, but old tariffs were still valid for a couple of hours.
The trip from gerbang tol Cikarang ('Cikarang toll gate') all the way to the airport then costed 15,500 Rupiah; 5,000 Rupiah on the Cikampek toll road and 10,500 Rupiah on the Jakarta Inner City Toll Road and the Sedyatmo toll road connecting Jakarta with the airport. I did not have to pay the first stretch as it was already included in the bus fare which brought me to the Semanggi area in Jakarta.
On the way back from the airport to Lippo Cikarang I got a Blue Bird taxi for the entire trip as I didn't want to wait for the DAMRI bus because of heavy evening rush-hour traffic all over the city and also on the toll roads. I knew toll tariffs were raised by now, but I didn't expect I only had to pay 11,000 which was just a mere 500 Rupiah more than the old tariff.
The price on the stretch of toll road to Cikarang had not been changed at all, only heavy road users had to pay more here. With construction works still in progress - the 2 x 4 lanes is extended towards the east where it currently still is 2 x 3 lanes - traffic jams will still occur on the Cikampek toll road. By not increasing the tariffs for many road users they seem to keep in mind the daily frustrations of many.
