PEKANBARU - The Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare, Aburizal Bakrie, has been elected chairman of the Golkar Party early on Thursday, paving the way for the much-anticipated alliance with the administration of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Aburizal secured 296 votes, while his closest rival, Surya Paloh only received 240.
The two other candidates, Yuddy Chrisnandi and the son of former president Suharto, Hutomo 'Tommy' Mandala Putra, did not receive any votes at all. There were 538 registered voters at the national congress held in the city of Pekanbaru in Riau province on the island of Sumatra. Aburizal will lead Golkar for the next five years.
During his first speech, Aburizal said he would dedicate his time to help the party regain it's past glory. He had said earlier that he preferred a job at the Golkar party above a post in the government if he was elected head of Golkar. Speculations are that president Yudhoyono will at least name two ministers from Golkar in exchange to the support he got from the party.
