JAKARTA - At least four remote villages in the hilly areas along the western coast of Sumatra have been wiped out by landslides that were triggered by the 7.6 magnitude earthquake on September 30. It is estimated that over 600 people are buried. The government has said that the current death toll stands at 540, with most deaths in urban areas like Padang and Pariaman.
Rustam Pakaya, head of the Health Ministry's crisis center, said that three of the four villages, Pulau Aiya, Lubuk Lawe and Jumena, had been completely buried by earth when the earthquake caused the landslides. Some 400 people were attending a wedding in Pulau Aiya when the landslide took place there. "The village of Pulau Aiya has been covered with up to 30 meters of soil, even the 20-meter minaret of the mosque is completely gone." said Pakaya.
Pakaya said that only 26 bodies had been recovered while he advised not to look for the remaining bodies because it would only cause disease to spread, since many hundreds of bodies are under the soil and dirt. Rescue workers had just made it to Pulau Aiya yesterday, some three days after the quake, because roads to the village were completely cut off.
