JAKARTA - The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has said that the target of the number of tourists that will visit Indonesia in 2010 has been raised by half a million foreign tourists from the 2009 target of 6,5 million. "We are planning to raise the target for foreign tourist arrivals in 2010 to seven million, taking into account security improvements in Indonesia as well as the growth in arrivals this year," said Sapta Nirwandar, a marketing director at the ministry.
He also said that the ministry was optimistic the target for this year as well that of next year will be reached. Arrivals from January throughout July were up 2.6 percent compared to the same period last year. The total number of arrivals was 3.6 million in the first seven months of the year.
"The number of tourists is increasing every year, meaning that people trust Indonesia despite the bombings that occurred a few months ago." Sapta Nirwandar
Tourists from Australia, France, Saudi Arabia, China, Korea, Russia and Japan seemed to be more enthusiastic about visiting Indonesia. Their numbers have risen faster than visitors from other countries. The number of Australians was up 25 per cent from the same period last year, with some 267,000 arrivals in the until July.
Tourism has been a large contributor to the Indonesian economy, and a growing one as well. The sector is now the second-largest source of income for the country, only after the oil and gas sector. This makes tourism an important factor in Indonesia that has to be cherished and supported as much as possible. The ministry is currently supporting the Komodo National Park for becoming one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

With tourism becoming a large contributor to the Indonesian economy also starts prostitution to be a major source of income. Most of the Singaporean and Malaysian tourists who are coming through the gates of Batam are there only for 1 reason, same as the Arabs in Jakarta and Lombok and western women for gigolos in Bali.

Has been for many years, especially when there was still gambling on Batam. That has been closed down by a more religious governor, so Singaporeans only go here to do officially nothing during the weekend. Problem solved! Problem for the government is that their income has dwindled because gambling has disappeared from the main street as well have 'related' jobs.
