JAKARTA - The Textile Museum in Central Jakarta is preparing to open an additional part of the museum inside the current complex to house the ever growing collection of batik. This is also done to attract more visitors to the museum as well. The head of the museum, Indra Riawan, said that they were looking to complete the planning for the new museum before the end of the year.
The current main building of the museum is a private residence built in the 19th century. It is located on Jalan K.S. Tubun and currently displays some 1.800 items from across the Indonesian archipelago. Most of them are batik. The museum is planning on renovating the 300 sq.m. contemporary textile gallery to make room for the new part of the museum. He could not tell when the new museum would open, since funding had to be sought at the city government before the renovation could start.
