JAKARTA - Based on information released by the Center of Volcanology and Disaster Management, the Dieng volcano complex in the regency of Wonosobo is showing slightly increased activity. The last time there was a large eruption in the complex was on February 20, 1979. Then, 149 people died because they came in contact with poisonous gases. Smaller eruptions however are more common.
Observations show that there have been a few tremors in the Dieng volcano complex, but this is nothing out of the ordinary. These were all recorded by seismographs, but were not felt by humans because they were too small. On September 26 at around 20:00 local time (GMT+7) there was a rumbling sound observed in a valley and at 00:05 local time there was an exhaust of mud in southern direction which reached some 140 meters. It covered an area around the site of the eruption with a layer of mud up to ten centimeters.
The temperature of the nearby Sileri crater has been observed as being stable around 70° Celsius. There were also no reports of poisonous gases in the area of the eruption. Based on this information, the center said that a small phreatic eruption had taken place, but that was not dangerous to villagers living and working in the area. The status of the volcano is kept at 'normal activity'. Residents are advised to listen to messages of the center as speculation over a possible eruption of the Dieng vulcano is of no use and have no ground at this moment.
