YOGYAKARTA - Some 50 small shops selling snacks and souvenirs at the Prambanan Temple complex in Central Java were completely lost in a fire. The fire broke out at around 19:30 local time (GMT+7), when shops were already closed for about two hours. There were no people at the scene of the fire when it occurred so there were no injuries.
Some 50 units were lost in the fire, but the cause of the fire is to be investigated by the police. The market area is located at over one kilometer from the historically important temples. A staff member of the temple complex estimated that the damages would be some 1.2 billion Rupiah (85.000 euro). When the fire brigade came to the scene, it took just an hour to put out the flames and save the rest of the shops in the area.
The Prambanan temple complex will be open for visitors as usual, as the market itself is an addition to the park, but not an essential part.
