SURAKARTA - Some 5.000 Muslims from several districts in the Surakarta region gathered yesterday to declare their fight against terrorism. A number of Islamic organizations and leaders of boarding schools gathered on the central square of Kotabarat to denounce acts of terrorism which have already killed hundreds in Indonesia alone in the past decade.

Ahmad Sukino called on Muslims to avoid controversy over the use of terrorism to defend their religion. He said that Islam never condoned acts of violence. "Islam doesn’t teach terrorism and terrorism cannot be connected with Islam," said Ahmad. The rally was organized one week after the anti-terrorism unit from the Indonesian police, Densus 88, stormed a house in the Surakarta regency, killing four terrorists, including Noordin M. Top, Southeast Asia's most wanted terrorist.
Wahyuddin, a spokesperson for the Al Mukmin Islamic boarding school in Ngruki, Sukoharjo sub-district, also condemned terrorism. The Al Mukmin boarding school has been blamed for 'delivering' a number of Indonesian terrorists in the recent past, something that the leader of the school, Abu Bakar Bashir denies. He himself was eventually cleared of all relations to be Bali bombing in 2002 after being in prison for over a year. Bashir himself did not show up at the meeting.
