BANDUNG - Bandung is the next city to get some form of new public transport in the form of Trans Metro Bandung (TMB) rapid mass transport. After a long period of protests by other bus operators the new system will be put in use today. The head of the TMB operating company, Yadi Haryani, told that the mayor of Bandung already issued a decree on the official launch.
Plans for the TMB were delayed last year after violent protests by hundreds of bus drivers. They claimed that the TMB would threaten their income, which is already dwindling. The deputy mayor of Bandung, Ayi Vivianand said that the city government has come to an agreement on the launch after a few meetings with bus cooperatives in the city. Protests are often the only form of action of opponents working in the same business, since improving their own service is something they have never heard of.
The Trans Metro Bandung is a service which is similar to the TransJakarta busway system in Jakarta. The first routes that will open will be along Jalan Soekarno-Hatta, the Cibiru line and Cibeureum line. The buses do not have a separate lane, like the busway system in Jakarta, so it has to share the already very crowded roads of Bandung.
