JAKARTA - High waves have caused a wooden boat to sink in the waters of the island of Halmahera in North Maluku. 15 passengers were killed in the accident while 15 others are still missing, according to the Indonesian navy. 29 of the 59 passengers and crew on board of the boat were rescued soon after the boat went down Monday late in the afternoon.
Bad weather and high waves caused the boat to sink, according to Iwan Widodo, a member of the Indonesian navy. He said he was hoping to find more people alive. Ferries are a main source of transportation in Indonesia, the world's largest archipelagic nation with more than 17,000 islands and a population of 235 million. Accidents at sea are common due to overcrowding and poor safety standards.
