JAKARTA - The chief of the Constitutional Court, Mahfud M.D., has asked the national police to drop an investigation into deputy chiefs of the Corruption Eradication Commission KPK, Chandra Hamzah and Bibit Samad Rianto if no solid evidence was found. Mahfud said that he doubted that the commission leaders had really committed crimes an asked the police to publicly back up their accusations.
"They are said to have received Rp 5.1 billion, but the sender said he did not give it to Bibit and Chandra. So what is the accusation? They said to have forced the immigration authorities to slap a travel ban on graft suspects, but the immigration director general said he never came under pressure as the request followed the procedure," said Mahfud.
Mahfud said that the ongoing public argument between the national police and the KPK is a legal dispute that should be resolved in front of a court. "If the charges are unclear but the case is left hanging in the balance, our legal system will be at risk," said Mahfud said as quoted by kompas.com.
