JAKARTA - As much as 294 flights from the international airport of Soekarno-Hatta near Jakarta were more than half an hour late yesterday. The flights were domestic as well as international flights, told a staff member at a Lebaran information point at the airport. Most planes were delayed because of operational reasons, caused by delays elsewhere in the country earlier on the day.
Most planes in Indonesia do not just fly a single route, but touch down in several cities in a row, which makes it a quite vulnerable to delays during the day. Planes from Mataram, Padang and to Pontianak were among the flights delayed more than 1.5 hours. Passengers on delayed flights have the right to receive a light snack is their flight is late between 30 and 90 minutes.
For flights that are delayed more than 90 minutes, passengers have the right to be rebooked to another flight, even with another airline. But the problem is that this is the most busy time of the year for airlines in the country, so rebooking to another flight is virtually impossible because all seats have been sold out completely.
