JAKARTA - The head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics agency , Sri Woro, has said that waters in big parts of Indonesia will be hit by waves with heights up to five meters, caused by bad weather in the region. The bad weather comes at a time which is the most busy travel period in Indonesia, the upcoming Idul Fitri celebrations.
Sri said that people that have to travel over sea were advised to reconsider their travel plans in a warning almost unheard of in Indonesia. "People who will go to their hometowns by sea should be very careful. We do not recommend traveling by sea as the weather will be bad and dangerous until next week." Waves with heights up to three meters are predicted to hit the Sunda Strait between Sumatra and Java, eastern Java and Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and the southern Maluku region.
The highest waves are predicted to hit the waters of western Aceh, the Riau archipelago, western Kalimantan and northern Papua. Waves of up to five meters in some areas will be caused by heavy rainstorms and strong winds which are likely to occur in these regions in the coming days. "There is a great chance of cumulonimbus clouds and strong winds that will heighten the waves," she said. Heavy rainfall near the coast would only make problems worse.
