LIPPO CIKARANG - In another huge step backwards, the regional government of Aceh, in the northern tip of Sumatra, has accepted the new - far more strict - Islamic laws. The ones now in place just tell people how to dress and obliges Muslems to pray, but the laws now accepted include a prison term of eight years for just being gay and being stoned to death if you decided to have sex with someone else then your spouse.
A regional lawmaker has said that the new sharia laws were accepted unanimously, completely not representing the wishes of the population in the region. Other lawmakers were quick to emphasize that putting the new laws into the daily life will not happen overnight, as further preparations have to be made on a regional and national level.
The PPP and PKS (both in fact radical Islamic political parties that try to keep their Islamist agenda hidden to the rest of the world) were happy that the new strict laws were already adopted now. The new laws would deepen the practice of sharia laws in Aceh. To prove adultery however there must be four witnesses, which might be an indication that the current civil police Satpol PP or a religious police force yet to be created is to be instructed on how to act.
The new sharia laws regulate punishments for drinking alcohol, gambling, being in a closed environment with a person of the opposite sex, homosexuality and rape. Gambling and rape are already forbidden by Indonesian laws, but the additional regulations in the sharia law will for sure threaten minorities in the province even further.
Human rights groups and members of parliament have called for action from the central government to look into these new sharia laws in the region, saying that they would indeed threaten minorities in the region. The new laws could also be used to undermine equality stipulated in the Indonesian Constitution.
