LIPPO CIKARANG - Plane crashes normally are breaking news across the world because of their sudden nature and the often high numbers of casualties involved in that kind of accidents. Reporting such events - and others that are also causing worldwide news - should be handled with care. However it is not always that easy to select the information and images going with them. Making a mistake in a hurry is nothing uncommon as well.
The image below however is nothing close to a mistake when people are in a hurry. It is a short message about the Twin Otter that skidded over the runway earlier today. No casualties, no burning wreckage, just a flat tire. However news, no breaking news, not even close to that. Indonesian media however sometimes don't see what they can do by adding a simple 'illustrative picture' with their text. As you can see below, a picture of a plane engulfed in smoke is placed right next to the text about the Twin Otter incident.
Placing such pictures - and not removing them when alerted on this strange combination - can be painful and confusing especially for those who don't speak the language and in some way still end up at the website. A Twin Otter is a small plane which does not resemble a jumbo jet, but some people don't know that as well. Using an illustrative picture bigger than a thumbnail in a news message is not really smart as well. It doesn't add information at all, but just creates confusion. And it looks stupid.
