LIPPO CIKARANG - The local police in some districts along the northern highway over the island of Java will install snipers on points where crime is rampant. The snipers will be placed between Situbondo and Banyuwangi in East Java province during the Idul Fitri travel period. "As many as 30 snipers will be placed in the highway to reduce crime rate during the holidays," said Sapto Nugroho, of the Besuku Police.
Nugroho said that because crime rates are even higher during the coming holidays, he ordered the snipers to be located directly along the main road. This should prevent violent robbery, extortion and other criminal incidents. Other police districts in Indonesia did not take such drastic actions, but warned people to be careful during their trip to their loved ones back home.
The next time the police is doing something about crime, they should not make such information public of course. A warning like this is a simple way to find out that criminals should not be active along this stretch of the main highway - which is just a two-lane road. Many hundreds of kilometers of road through other districts however is just guarded by thousands of regular police. But that is nothing more than a false sense of safety, which is more dangerous than having no police on the road at all.
