JAKARTA - The Ministry of Transportation has said that it expected that more than 27 million people will hit the roads to be with their families during the upcoming Idul Fitri period later this month. Jusman Syafii Djamal, Minister of Transport, told that it was expected that some 16.3 million people would take public transport and planes, while 11 million others would use private vehicles.
He added that the combined capacity of all public transportation modes, including buses, trains, vessels and airplanes was 36.4 million seats. Which should be more than enough to transport all holiday makers in the coming weeks. "We can say that the available transportation facilities will suffice for the demand. Therefore we will focus on traffic regulation and management to ensure that this year’s Idul Fitri exodus runs smoothly," he said after a cabinet meeting.
Probably Jusman did not keep in mind that the Indonesian transport system is on the verge of total collapse with large number of buses, planes and especially vessels that already were long overdue on their retirement ages. Improvements have been made to replace planes and buses in recent years however. The main problem is the infrastructure.
Big parts of Indonesia still has to make transportation possible with infrastructure hardly improved since the colonial time with many single-track railroads and narrow two-lane roads that are used as highways across many of the islands. An island-wide toll road system on the island of Java is in the makings, but progress is slow due to bureaucratic and economical reasons.
