LIPPO CIKARANG - A thick smoke, caused by forest fires, covers Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan and is getting even thicker now. The visibility in some areas of the city is less than 50 meters. Residents of Palangkaraya hope for any rain to come soon, some even held an exceptional istisqo prayer, in which one asks for rain.
In Palembang, South Sumatra, smoke also causes problems. The visibility in some areas is just a few meters, which causes people to turn on the lights on their vehicles to avoid accidents. Smoke from the forest fires also covers other areas like the Musi river, where visibility is even worse and daily activity is heavily affected.
The international airport of Sultan Mahmud Badarudin II in Palembang, was forced to close down for over an hour earlier this morning because visibility on the runway was only 300 to 500 meters. The operational manager of the airport, Iskandar Hamid, said that the airport was closed for safety reasons.
