YOGYAKARTA - An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter Scale has hit south of Yogyakarta. The quake had place around 23:12 local time (GMT+7) and caused residents to flee their houses. According to the head of the Meteorological and Geophysical Agency in Yogyakarta said that the quake took place on the ocean at a distance of 253 kilometers southeast of Wonosari, the capital of the district of Gunungkidul, in the province.
According to him the quake did not have the power to create a tsunami, because the quake was too far away from shore. He explained that the quake took place on the fault line between the Indoaustralian and Euroasian plates. A tsunami did indeed not materialize. Many residents in the district of Bantul and the city of Yogyakarta felt the quake and walked out. In Wonosari itself the quake was felt less strong because the rock-formations are stronger there.
