MEDAN - Thousands of houses in the Medan Sunggal area, in the city of Medan, have been flooded with up to 80 centimeters of water. The flood occurred during heavy rains that hit the area for about four hours last night. The water reached up to the waist in Jalan Rajawali, Jalan Sei Sikambing and Jalan Gatot Subroto as far as the Medan Baru area.
The flood causes numerous vehicles - motorcycles as well as cars - to be damaged. "It is the first time that I see the city of Medan flooded with this much water," said Mulyadi, a resident of Medan Sunggal that was caught in a traffic jam around the Jalan Rajawali intersection. Dozens of angkot (local public transport) on the route Medan - Terminal Pinang Baris - were broke down and had to be pushed to the side of the road or a dryer place.
The flood most likely occurred because most drainage alongside the main roads is completely clogged up with trash, so they can not transport water anymore. The city government of Medan has just started to clean out many of the drainage canals, just to prevent these floods from happening in the first place. Most drainage canals end up in the Deli and Denai rivers that cross the city.
