TASIKMALAYA - The edge of the crater of the Mount Galunggung volcano in the district of Tasikmalaya in West Java province has cracked over a length of 300 meters. The crack is just about a centimeter wide however, but it is assumed that the large earthquake of September 2, 2009 is the cause. The activity of the volcano however is not increasing. The crack is only dangerous because it can cause a landslide.
The observation post for the volcano in the underdistrict of Padakembang recorded 77 tremors on September 2. Four of them could be felt. September 3 there were 56 tremors and yesterday only 22. One of those quakes had a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter Scale. "There is no change in activity of the volcano, there are only tectonic tremors here at the moment," said Heri Supartono, the head of the observation post for the volcano.
Heri said that people that wanted to climb the mountain should always have permission first. They should report themselves at the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Management (PVMBG) in Bandung. "There are tremors here every day, also before the earthquake. It is likely that the tremors now are corrections of the large earthquake, so the geology can settle now," he explained.
The villagers in Cibitu in the district of Tasikmalaya have seen exhausts of gas and cold rock-slides coming down from the volcano's slopes. One of the residents, Jojo (65) said exhaust of gases has also occurred in 1950 and 1982. "In 1982 the volcano erupted, but that started with the exhaust of gas. But I do not understand what causes this," he said.
