SIDOARJO - Irresponsibility by PT Lapindo Brantas may cause more problems for the people already affected by the mud flow near Sidoarjo just south of Surabaya in East Java province. The mud, that has been gushing out of a crater in the earth for over three years now, used to be pumped away in the Porong river. But these pumps are not working correctly anymore. Only two out of the 12 are functioning.
The volume of mud within the dam is growing every single day and is slowly approaching a critical point now. Achmad Zulkarnain, spokesperson for the Sidoarjo Mudflow Management Agency (BPLS) said that in the last week, the mud has been pushed up by some three meters in certain areas around the crater. "The spurts of mud may be caused by the increasing pressure from the surface, thus squeezing the subsurface and generating the ‘kicks,’ " Zulkarnain said.
He added that the 12 pumps installed and managed by PT Minarak Lapindo Jaya, a subsidiary of 'Lapindo' which is to deal with the mud flow by presidential decree, did not work properly. The company said that it did not have the proper funds to maintain the pumps, and repeated warnings about upcoming problems are completely ignored. The problem got even worse when the police stopped their investigation on 'Lapindo' last August.
"How can I say it’s not critical? Only two of Minarak’s pumps plus three of BPLS’s are operational, which means we are only able to move 10 percent of the Lapindo mud to the Porong River," he said. The height of the mud behind the emergency dams is reaching as high as 11 meters, which is the critical point for these emergency dams according to Zulkarnain.
