Garut in the dark as death toll slowly climbs LIPPO CIKARANG - The city of Garut, in western Java, has lost virtually all power during the heavy earthquake that shook the region earlier today. Based on information gathered at in the city, eight of the districts in the city of Garut do not have power; Kecamatan Cisirupan, Padendeng, Bungbulang, Singajaya, Sendey, Pamulihan, Bayu Resmi, and Leuwigoong.

"Residents have already settled down. However they might not be brave enough to enter their houses, they have set up camp for the night along roads and in front of the regional offices," said Didik Ahmad Ramdhani, the head of the underdistrict Sidalong in Garut. He added that the situation was under control now, however the city has gone almost completely dark.

Elsewhere on the island, the total death toll from the 7.3 magnitude earthquake, has risen to 26 people in total in various locations in the region. At least nine people were found dead after a landslide occurred in a village in the district of Cianjur. Up to 60 others are still missing there. Elsewhere people died because of falling objects during the quake.
