JAKARTA - Arif, who sent just one angry SMS to the First Lady, Ani Yudhoyono, is now facing a 12 year prison term for threatening the president and his family. He can also be fined up to 2 billion Rupiah (142.000 euro) when he is convicted of violating the Information Technology law that was accepted late last year.
Arif has already sent a formal apology to the president and has also received an answer that his deed has been forgiven by the president. This does not mean however that he is a free man once again. The regional police of Banten sees him as a suspect for violating two laws and still faces a maximum of 12 years in prison.
Arif was arrested a few days ago by the anti-terrorist unit Densus 88 after he sent an angry SMS in which he threatened and insulted the presidential family. Arif however asked the police to free him, because he already had excused himself for his actions and his excuses were accepted by the president. The regional police however has just followed an arrest warrant for Arif and is still waiting what will happen next.
