MAKASSAR - The police in Makassar, South Sulawesi, has arrested some 30 members of the Front Pemuda Bersatu (United Youth Movement, FPB) who were raiding night spots in the city. The members of the movement were raiding places as billiard halls, karaoke and cafe's. They entered the places holding a speech that they did not have the decency to close down during the Ramadan period. It is however not allowed to hold raids and the night spots that are still open should have permits.
At the time the police went to the location to make the arrests the situation soon went fuzzy as hundreds of residents fled the area where the members of the movement just held a raid. Eventually the police arrested some 30 people, including the coordinator, Firman A. Gani (27) and Maulana (29). The others that were arrested are mainly student activists.
The police has informed that raiding night spots is not the task of vigilante teams. With holding these raids, they themselves cause a less safe situation in the living environment of other people. The police chief of Makassar, Baharuddin Andi, said that he would like to point the FPB to the Perda (city bylaws) of the city. "They can cause panic and do damage to the reputation of the city of Makassar as a safe place," he said.
