JAKARTA - Heavy rainstorms have hit the greater Jakarta area overnight. Rain started to fall down from around 20.00 local time yesterday evening and did not stop until the early hours of today. Rain of this intensity and length is rare, since it is in the middle of the dry season in the area. The heavy rains caused some streets to flood immediately.
In East Jakarta there was some 25 centimeters of water in some streets. The newly renovated Jalan I Gusti Ngurah Rai flooded up to 30 centimeters. Several fly-overs on the road were used as shelter by motorcyclists, causing traffic problems as well. In other places, water heights did not reach that high, but because the rain lasted so long, is caused worries about a sudden flood among residents in some areas.
In areas that are regularly flooded during the wet monsoon, water flowed in the houses last night as well. A heavily clogged up draining system and non-functioning sewers cause the direct floods after just a light rain. In some areas rain already started to fall much earlier than in the evening. In Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, it started to rain heavily around 09:00 local time yesterday, causing the rivers to rise.
It was not only the rain that caused problems. A large number of lightning strikes caused bad visibility and more dangerous circumstances in the area. A number of toll road accidents is said to have occurred because of the bad weather. A few people that were injured in these accidents were brought to local hospitals.
