JAKARTA - Since early this morning, the airport of Sentani, near Jayapura in the easternmost province of Papua, has been occupied by people from the Yobe tribe. They demand a proper settlement for the estate that has been taken from them. Three planes of different airliners were not able to land on the airport and were diverted to the airport of Biak.
Based on information gathered at the scene of the airport, a Garuda Indonesia plane was to land at the airport at 06:45 local east Indonesia time (GMT+9), had to circle over the area for half an hour before it received confirmation that it was able to land there. Eventually the plane was diverted to Biak airport and landed there safely.
A Merpati Airlines plane from Merauke and another plane from Lion Air had to undergo similar actions. Both were diverted to Biak when they tried to land at the Sentani Airport around 07:10 local time. The three planes only managed to continue their trip to Sentani at around 10:00 local time. By then, hundreds of locals still are at the airport itself. They are still negotiating with the airport which is heavily guarded by police and the Indonesian army.
Local residents from the Yobe tribe demand some 9 billion Rupiah (630.000 euro) in compensation for estate that was taken from them to construct a longer runway and a passenger terminal building for the airport. Over 5,000 square meters was taken from the Yobe tribe, but they have never seen any compensation for this.
