JAKARTA - The Badan Narkotika Nasional (BNN, National Narcotics Brigade) in Indonesia has said that the country currently has 3.6 million registered addicts of various kinds of narcotics. It is estimated that only some ten percent of the cases around drug abuse surfaces, which makes people believe that the problem is in fact far larger.
Because of this fact, BNN has made three commitments to stop the spread of narcotics. Indonesians should be made aware about the dangers of drugs. They should also dare to speak against it. Secondly the 3.6 million addicts should be 'cured' and the third is to close down all trade routes of drugs in the country, from the first stockpile to the end user.
These plans should be completed in 2015, when Indonesia hopes to be free of illicit drugs all together. They did not receive a wake-up call yet about how to deal with drugs, since it is widely known that a crackdown on drugs can have catastrophic effects. It will go more underground and will almost certainly not prevent users from using again and from new users to become addicts.
