BENGKAYANG - The regional police of Bengkayang, which belongs to the city of Pontianak on the island of Kalimantan, has seized 286 bags of illegally imported sugar from Sarawak, Malaysia. The sugar was imported via Jagoi Babang. The police did not have an eye on any suspects yet.
Importing sugar illegally is big business, because the product is often transported from the border to cities and towns in the area by bus. About 20 bags of sugar per bus, which totals to 1.000 kilograms, are transported at a time. The area has a traditional trading agreement with Malaysia, which means that locals can buy products worth 600 Ringgit a month.
"Now this illegal route has been cut of, distribution will fail, said Nimitch of the local police. He added that sugar is also not very cheap in Malaysia as well, but the illegally imported sugar is subsidized by the Malaysian government. Jagoi Babang is located some 280 kilometers from the city of Pontianak. The town of Singkawang is only 160 kilometers away and is also a favorite place to sell the sugar.
