JAKARTA - The Indonesian contestant currently competing in the Miss Universe competition, Zivanna Letisha Siregar, leads the online poll sponsored by the event. In the poll, in which tens of thousands of visitors have voted for their favorite woman, the Indonesian is followed by Brazilian Larissa Costa and Guatemalan Lourdes Figueroa.
Officials closed the comment section of the website because there were just too many reactions flowing in in the first couple of days. There were 50.000 reactions given in a short period of time, too much to be properly screened. Zivanna is the second Indonesian woman to get to the last 15. Artika Sari Devi did the same in 2005.
As usual there are some hard line Islamic groups that do not agree with women to actively participate in society and thus had to demonstrate against it. Fortunately the government is not really bothered by it and decided to do nothing with the baseless claim that holding a beauty pageant in the Bahama's is inappropriate with Islam and the eastern culture, the eastern culture of FPI that is.
