JAMBI - Thieves have killed a tiger in the Taman Rimba Zoo in Jambi last Saturday. The female Sumatran tiger was killed before the body was stolen from the zoo, according to local authorities. The incident happened around three in the morning. The police chief in Jambi, Posma Lubis, said that it was most likely that the tiger was killed and stolen to be sold via an international network. There was no sign of damage to the cage.
Sumatran tigers are endangered species. It is believed that there are only a few hundred of them in the wild. They are continued to be threatened by poaching and the loss of their habitat by increasing human population and deforestation. Parts of the body of a tiger are in high demand and are used in traditional Chinese medicine. The Sumatran Tiger Trust, a tiger conservation group in England, said that the body of an adult tiger can fetch some 15.000 euro on the black market.
