JAKARTA - The Jakarta city government has warned private organizations not to disturb or attack nightclubs and other businesses that stay open during the Ramadan. The police chief in Jakarta has made it clear that mass organizations are not authorized to perform such supervisory functions. Enforcement of law and local bylaws can only be performed by the police, the city government and appointed order agencies.
"If mass organization members notice night spots that operate outside the officially permitted hours, they should report the spots to the authorities," said Budhiman, the head of the regional police. He also told that the police has sent a notice to over 1,100 bars, clubs, massage parlors, nightclubs and karaoke operators early this month. This notice contained information on whether the place is allowed to stay open with limited opening hours or has to close down all together.
Nightclubs, massage parlors and saunas have to close their doors during the entire month. Karaoke and spots with live music are only allowed to operate between 20:30 until 01:30. Venues at star-rated hotels however are allowed to stay in business as normal, related to pressures from the tourism sector. In recent years, hard-line Islamic organizations have frequently carried out attacks on places of entertainment during the holy month of fasting.

Unfortunately the zealots of the FPI are sometimes more "powerful" then the police (well, actually the police allows them to raid clubs, etc., so the police can extort so-called protection money afterwards).

exactly right, i once saw with my own eyes how FPI smashed up a bar/billiard, the police were just standing by, watched and did absolutely nothing!
