JAKARTA - Hutomo Mandala Putra, the son of late Indonesian president Suharto, has started his effort to finally become a president. An aide of Tommy, as he is widely known, has said this to the press. Tommy has built up quite an impressive 'track record' in legal matters, including a conviction for murder. He is now seeking to become the new leader of the Golkar Party, the political movement of his father, which has been in turmoil after loosing the recent elections.
"He surely has ambitions of becoming Indonesian president in future. He will be as good, or even better than his father," Tommy's spokesman, Yusyafri Syafei. Tommy's move comes 11 years after his father was forced to resign from his presidency after heavy protests and seven years after he was found guilty of murder on a judge who had convicted him of corruption. The flamboyant playboy has kept a fairly low profile since he was released from prison after serving just four years of the 15 years he was sentenced to.
Tommy has recently won several battles relating corruption charges. In February 2008 he cleared himself of corruption. He did the same earlier this year in a 400 million US dollar case. His father, who died last year, is said to have earned vast amounts of money from corruption during his reign. Syafei admitted that Tommy was not 'clean', but he also said that this was no different than other politicians in the country.
He is sure that Indonesians in the streets are longing for the stability of the time that Suharto was still president. Strong economic growth lead the Indonesians to better times, but only with appalling graft and human rights issues. "He has the blood of Suharto running through his veins. All people know that during the Suharto years people did not have to search for food. He will gain support." The Golkar party will be in opposition for the first time of its existence after they only gained 14.45 percent of the vote in last April's elections.
