JAKARTA - Indonesia is has reacted positive to the Maluku government in exile when they announced that they no longer fight for an independent state. The Indonesian ambassador to the Netherlands, Junus Effendi Habibie, told this to Wereldomroep. According to the ambassador there already is autonomy in the Maluku region, so the situation doesn't have to be changed anymore. A complete independence is rejected straight away.
Habibi reacts to the new president of the RMS-government in exile, John Wattilete. He announced that the moment was about to change it's course. The RMS-government has always fought for an independent nation in the Maluku region of Indonesia. Wattilete, who will become president later this year, now wants to accept a form of autonomy, like in Aceh. "The most important thing is that we can govern Maluku," he said.
In 1950, residents of Maluku proclaimed an independent nation, but that was ended by Indonesian forces. Ever since, a part of the people from Maluku fight for their own state. In the 1970's they used violence in the Netherlands to get more attention from that government. They hijacked trains and occupied buildings.
