BATAM - Before you know it you are in another boarding room. In this case on the airport of Hang Nadim. Back to Jakarta indeed, but the Batavia Air plane has not arrived yet so the minutes of delay start to count already. In contrary to the airport of Jakarta, there are no boards with information about the recently introduced laws on the protection of passengers in case of delay. Most people don't know about the fact that they have the right to a snack and a drink if there is a delay indeed.
Sitting on one of the chairs in the middle of the boarding room there are children playing, people talking loud through their telephones and a group of girls talking. The loud bass sounds originating from two televisions that are directly across each other in the room are annoying at least. They can fight for the most viewers in this way because they are both set to different channels and both have commercials with play the sound even louder. The wireless internet connection of Indosat doesn't seem to be working as wel. No network coverage, so I have to do it without internet as well. But there are much worse things of course.
Worse things happen when it is announced that the plane is indeed delayed for an hour. I already suspected that they were about to announce it, since the plane wasn't on the apron yet with only 15 minutes before departure. People in the boarding room reacted slightly irritated. The more than 100 people do not intent to do much about it however. They soon continue with what they were going while the announcement is repeated and announced in English as well. That means I can start up my normal set of actions in case of delay again.
I will close my laptop soon and will then leave the SMS-ing and calling people in the boarding room to have a cup of coffee at Oh La La. Lack of a better place indeed, because this airport isn't really that big. Even the dead internet connection now causes some irritation. That's the way things work here, and you can't do anything about it. The 'operational reasons' for delay are standard as well. Maybe it's for the better, because I don't even want to know if it was a loose tire on the plane that caused the delay.
Note: when I moved to Oh La La, I had network coverage at GPRS-speed (4kb/sec), so I was able to put this article online even before departure from Batam.
