LIPPO CIKARANG - It happens every year. In the run up to the holy month of fasting Ramadan, a part of the Indonesian police force is panicked slightly. They have to pay for their mudik (a trip back to their home town) at the end of the period of fasting and will have less work during the month itself because millions of people go home as well and public life changes drastically.
Since the work of most police visible in the streets is extorting money in the form of small amounts for every driver stopped, it is logical that a radical solution has to be found so enough money is retrieved from the pockets of road users so the police will have enough of it during the Ramadan itself.
More random traffic checks where hundreds of motorcyclists are 'trapped' are organized. Motorists there are checked for having the license plate registration STNK and a driver license on them. This is a fairly large problem for the average motorcyclist, since a driver license is something that most people don't see as necessary. The yellow paper that is called STNK is often forgotten as well.
This is big money for the government police in the street, because they have to retrieve the payments. Those should officially be processed via writing a fine, paying that at a branch of BRI bank or the police office and returning that yellow thing. What normally happens however is that you can better wait for the police to ask if you want to pay directly. Since all those administrative regulations only take a lot of time.
No problem, since I trust the police perfectly and will give him the money to make the payment for me later on after his shift is over. Of course everyone knows that this form of payment is pure corruption, something that is still seen as haram according to the religion of those fasting later on. Have fun with your money, you will not go to heaven.
