SURABAYA - Staff of the Highway Patrol (PJR) on the recently opened Suramadu bridge between Surabaya and Madura have caught a thief which had just stolen a piece of iron used to break the waves around one of the towers in the middle of the bridge. It is not the first time that iron has been stolen from the bridge, and stealing already started even before the bridge was officially opened.
The more than 1.000 kilo's of stolen iron were confiscated as well as a Suzuki Carry pick-up with license plate L 7174 BT, which was used to transport the iron. Mat Jupri, a resident of Jalan Benteng I in Surabaya was arrested on the scene. The arrest was made after the Highway Patrol noticed the car passing by with a heap of iron in the back.
The car also transported a welding tool for welding under water and diving equipment. When the pick-up was stopped and checked, it soon proved that the iron came from the lower part of the bridge it was driving on when it was stopped. Normally there should be a kind of wave breaking piece of iron at the very base of the bridges tower. Jupri eventually admitted that the iron was not his, but originated from the bridge, the iron was to be sold to a local trader.
