CENGKARENG - I have just arrived at 'Soekarno-Hatta International Airport of Jakarta', or short just 'the airport' or even shorter Soetta. Later this afternoon, at 16:20 local time, my flight should depart. When I got out of the taxi about half an hour ago I first bought a cup of iced tea at A&W. Not the best choice in the area, but I needed over an hour to reach the airport and had already spend an hour in the bus. Two hours without drinking is far from good for me.
After the first check of my ticket and luggage I found myself in a crowd of people in Terminal 1B, where the flights of Batavia Air depart, amongst others. It was crowded, but most check-in counters seem to be open. Passengers for flight 7P-573 were able to check-in at counter 16 according to the information board, so I expected to queue up there. No row at counter 16, it was closed. I had to be at counter 11.
I was able to check-in there rather quickly, but far too early. I like to be early here, better to have another drink and take a look around than arrive here in a hurry and to find myself marching through hurds of Indonesians. The plane would not leave at 16:20 but at 17:15. I was informed about the delay when I checked in already.
A number of other flights from Batavia Air also depart later than scheduled earlier. Most check-in counters have their own piece of paper with the new time of departure on them, because electronic information here is slower than making a printout. If it is ever changed in the system that is, because in all those years here I can not remember that I have ever received 100 percent good information.
With a slight breeze in my back I am on a bench - like most people here I need two chairs; one for myself and the other for my backpack and laptop bag. There is a slight breeze here because Terminal 1 has 'natural airconditioning', which means that there are no walls here. Only the departure areas are airconditioned areas.
This terminal now has, just like in the brand new low-cost carrier terminal one kilometer away, machines that sell coffee and other drinks. You will have to find out how you can force the machine to swallow one of those 5.000 Rupiah bank notes and then you should get something to drink. I don't dare to use it yet. Not because I am afraid to lose my money, but I am afraid the machine will be killed when it sucks in my bank note.
