MEDAN - A full planeload of passengers - about 180 of them - which should have been flying with Air Asia from Medan to Jakarta last night, were faced with large delays at the airport of Polonia near Medan yesterday evening. The huge delay of flight number QZ 7497 caused a number of passengers to get very angry. Eventually one staff member of the airline was taken hostage. All the passengers wanted was an explanation about the delay from the airline.
According to the passengers, the plane should have left at 19:10 local time, but that was delayed to 21:30 local time. But around that time the people were still waiting in the airport terminal building and the flight was delayed to midnight. There was no clear explanation about why the flight was delayed for seven hours at that time. Shortly after midnight however Air Asia announced that the flight would not be departing that night. The company said that the plane would leave on Monday morning - this morning.
A staff member of Air Asia told the passengers that they should go to a hotel which had been arranged by Air Asia at that time. But the passengers who had been waiting for over seven hours by then did not agree with the newest delay and reacted angrily to the staff member and took him hostage for as long as they were not able to fly or get proper information about what was going on.
Fortunately Indonesia does have some rudimentary laws for the protection of passengers. You have to ask for what you get and still they will look at you if you are crazy, so bring a print-out of the laws, just in case.. You DO have the right to receive a snack, meal, refund or hotel under certain conditions in Indonesia as well!
